About this event

Why did so few commentators and researchers in the 1950s and 1960s consider Britain to be an endemically racist country? In this talk, Dr Marcus Collins, Reader in Contemporary History at 91ÌÒÉ«ÊÓƵ, presents new research which shows that contemporary understandings of prejudice, discrimination, immigration and national identity portrayed ‘race’ relations in post-war Britain to be too ambivalent, contradictory and volatile to be characterised as racism. It examines social scientific research, opinion polls, parliamentary debates, newspaper commentary of the time to see how the reality of racism became more widely accepted in the late 1960s due to the popularity of Enoch Powell, black and left-wing activism, and new research which discredited models of white tolerance and demonstrated discrimination purely on grounds of skin colour.
