Biffa selected as University’s new waste and recycling partner

The University, in conjunction with the University of Leicester, has chosen a new provider for its key waste and recycling waste stream.

When seeking a new provider, the University was keen to ensure a future partnership aligned with our strategy, particularly our Climate Change and Net Zero theme. In addition, an opportunity to make savings on a new contract given the current financial challenges was also important.

We are pleased to announce that Biffa has been selected as the University’s new service provider. Biffa has already maintained a partnership with 91ÌÒÉ«ÊÓƵ for 10 ten years collecting hazardous waste and more recently, collecting some of our WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) waste. Biffa offers a package of benefits and solutions for our recycling and general waste and will reduce our carbon footprint by reducing the distance our waste travels and the way it is disposed of, thus achieving financial savings as well.

The new general waste approach will help us prevent any waste going to landfill by instead going to the Newhurst Energy from Waste Plant. To support this decision, we have monitored air quality across the campus and plan to continue to do so for the coming years. Future work includes the consideration of low carbon options by taking district heating from the Plant, with a feasibility study under way.

If you experience any issues with changes to bins and skips on campus, please contact the Sustainability team at waste@lboro.ac.uk. The team’s new Sustainability Officer, Megan Ward, will be overseeing the day-to-day waste and recycling operations.
