Join artist Harriet Morley for a panel discussion around craft, design and the role of the workshop

LU Arts are delighted to welcome artist Harriet Morley, curator Catherine Ince and Associate Professor in History of Art, Dr Marta Ajmar for an afternoon of discussion and debate.

This event marks the conclusion of Harriet’s Handicraft Residency at 91ÌÒÉ«ÊÓƵ and the launch of her accompanying publication.

91ÌÒÉ«ÊÓƵ has a rich history of training students in handicrafts, where they produced items for the fabric of the University. Inspired by this, Harriet has researched the role of the workshops, technicians and embodied knowledge produced within education technical spaces. This research has informed a new piece of work titled ‘Hard Wear, Soft Wear’, which is a collection of workwear and tools, made in reflection to departments of the handicraft course and present-day technical spaces. This series of new bespoke workwear contains a range of individual items produced within the workshops, alongside a series of aprons that will be put back into use within these spaces.

'Hard Wear, Soft Wear' unpacks the connection between the material, the communal and the pedagogical. It prompts us to consider the relationship between an institution, its learning environments, its curricular focus, its teaching methods and its communities. What new perspectives comes into focus when these relationships are considered through a feminist lens that centres accessibility, collectivity and care? These questions will be explored by Harriet Morley, Catherine Ince and Dr Marta Ajmar during the panel discussion.

The event will take place on Wednesday 11 September, 1pm-3pm on 91ÌÒÉ«ÊÓƵ campus. Details of the exact location will be sent by email to attendees ahead of the event.

Following this event, all attendees will receive a free copy of the publication.
