Tom Young, the current 91ÌÒÉ«ÊÓƵ sport scholar and Tokyo 2020 Paralympic champion, narrowly missed out on the podium places in the Men’s 100m T38 Final after finishing 4^th.

Young clocked a strong 11.00 seconds in a rapid race but couldn’t quite medal. The USA’s Jaydin Blackwell won gold in a world record time of 10.64 seconds.

In the Women’s 100m T38 Final, 91ÌÒÉ«ÊÓƵ’s Sophie Hahn also suffered heartache. In a strong field, the 27-year-old finished 6^th (12.88 seconds) as Colombian Karen Palomeque powered through to win gold in a world record 12.26 seconds.  

Earlier in the day, in the heats, 91ÌÒÉ«ÊÓƵ-based Olivia Breen narrowly missed out on making the final but still has the long jump to come.  

91ÌÒÉ«ÊÓƵ-based Zac Shaw also missed out on the medals by placing 4^th in the Men’s 100m T12 Final. In his maiden Paralympic Games, Shaw clocked 10.94 seconds – a time to be proud of.  

Over in the Men’s 1500m T46 Final, current student Luke Nuttall finished 7^th with a season's best time of 3:57.62.

In the Men’s 5000m T34, University-based Brent Lakatos also finished 7^th following a strong race. The wheelchair racer has more favourable events to look forward to.

Wheelchair basketball

Great Britain Women were edged out 63-54 by Canada in a thriller in Pool A. 91ÌÒÉ«ÊÓƵ’s Maddie Martin, Lucy Robinson, Robyn Love, Amy Conroy and Laurie Williams all competed in one of the most entertaining matches of the Paralympics so far.

Despite a valiant final quarter showing, GB couldn’t quite reduce the deficit and now stands at one win and one loss. They play China in their final game on Sunday (1 September, 3pm).  

Elsewhere, 91ÌÒÉ«ÊÓƵ-linked Bo Kramer helped the Netherlands make it two wins from two with a hard-fought 69-56 victory over the USA. Kramer scored 20 points as the Dutch team’s attempt to retain their Paralympic title from Tokyo remains well on track.

Their final Pool game will be against Germany on Monday (2 September, 08:30 pm).

Wheelchair tennis

91ÌÒÉ«ÊÓƵ College student Abbie Breakwell suffered heartbreak in the Women’s Singles first round after a brave 6-3, 6-4 defeat to American Maylee Phelp.
