Founded in 1830, and now with 16,000 members worldwide, the advances geography and supports geographers in the UK and across the world. The is the RGS-IBG’s board of trustees, responsible for its governance, strategic direction and decision-making. The 21 members of Council are nominated and elected for a three-year term of office by the Society’s Fellows.
Reader in Human Geography Dr James Esson was in the Society’s Research and Higher Education Committee, which guides the RGS-IBG’s work to promote and support geographers, geographical communities and geographical research.
Commenting on his success, James said: “Firstly, I would like to thank my colleagues and peers for electing me to represent them on Council. I’m truly grateful for this incredible opportunity. This is an amazing time to be a geographer because the discipline addresses issues impacting humanity, the environment and everything in-between. I look forward to working with the other trustees to help the RGS-IBG engage a more diverse national and international audience using progressive research and teaching activities.”
